What would be the first step to help my child?
Our first step together would involve a discussion with you and one of our staff members. This is important for two reasons. First, we'll need to get a handle on what issues your child is struggling with. Secondly, and most importantly, it is important that you take this time to see if you feel comfortable with us. You are about to make an incredibly important decision to entrust your child's psychological and behavioral health with us, and we want you to be 100% comfortable with the our staff.
Since each child's experience is unique, it would be hard to identify the form that our initial discussion will take. Ultimately, our focus during this first meeting is to identify what needs your child and your family have, and develop a general course of action to deal with these issues.
Our next step would involve meeting with your child. While some children would feel comfortable meeting with our staff alone, many others need the re-assurance of their parents to be close by. That decision will need to be made collectively based on the child's needs. The focus during this meeting will be to develop a diagnostic formulation and solidify a plan to deal with your child's issues. Often this plan will involve either Applied Behavior Analysis, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, or more often, a combination of elements of both types of interventions.

What is applied behavior analysis?
It's sometimes so hard to understand why your child is acting in a particular way. It's made even worse when these actions can cause a lot of distress to your child as well as other around her or him. Applied behavior analysis or ABA is a set of scientifically based principles and procedures that can help you uncover why your child is experiencing these difficulties, and develop a plan to help your child improve their functioning in home and at school.
